PHILIP CHOW, PHD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Chow is an Associate Professor at the Center for Behavioral Health & Technology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Virginia. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interest includes the use of mobile technology in monitoring and alleviating distress in cancer patients. He has particular interest in how mobile technology can be used to increase access and reach to vulnerable populations.
WES KINCHEN, MPH, BA
Study Coordinator
Wes Kinchen is a Research Specialist, Intermediate in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Wes completed his Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Public Health. He also completed an internship at St. Jude Children’s Research where he worked on a project to examine the effects of neighborhood deprivation on health behaviors of survivors of childhood cancer. Wes is a 15+ year cancer survivor. He hopes that his first-hand perspective of what the lives of persons battling cancer are like will benefit the research he is involved in. Wes has an interest in cancer survivorship, health behaviors in persons with cancer, prevention of chronic disease in persons with cancer, and novel interventions to improve the lives of cancer survivors.
ANGELA CHANG
Research Assistant
Angela is a research study assistant for this project. She is currently a rising 3rd year clinical psychology PhD student at Suffolk University. She received training as a practicum student at a college counseling center during her 2nd year and will be going on to receive additional practicum training at the Veteran Affairs (VA) in Bedford, MA to work with veterans with various presenting psychiatric and medical comorbidities. Angela’s research interest is centered on understanding how to improve the psychological wellbeing of adults with chronic health conditions, leverage remote/digital platforms to deliver psychosocial interventions to these populations, and help patients from underserved communities gain access to mental health services.
JANE RILEY
Research Assistant
Jane Riley is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science - BS in Biology, where she participated in undergraduate research regarding the use of AI in agriculture and education for East African farmers. Currently, as a first-year Master's student at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, she is eager to utilize and apply the skills she gains in the Public Health program. Her research interests include understanding efficient ways AI and technology can be exploited in medicine and discovering manners in which quality healthcare can be provided to underrepresented communities to improve their quality of life. Jane’s professional goal is to become a physician focusing mainly on women’s health and the health of underrepresented communities within that demographic.
JASMINE KAUFFELD

Hi everyone! My name is Jasmine Kauffeld and I am a first year MPH candidate here at the University of Virginia. I attended James Madison University for my undergrad, studying Health Sciences and Statistics. Over the summer, I worked at Inova Schar Cancer Research Institute, where I was a research intern on two urinogenital carcinoma clinical trials, and after meeting Dr. Chow and hearing about this cancer study, I am incredibly grateful and excited to continue my research experience on this team. A fun fact about me is that I grew up almost entirely overseas as the child of a career state department officer in 10 different countries and have visited nearly 50!
LAUREN EGGLETON
Research Assistant
Lauren in a first year Master of Public Health student from Midlothian, Virginia. She completed her Bachelor's degree at Miami University majoring in public health with a concentration in policy & administration and a minor in rhetoric writing. Before starting at UVA she served as a Virginia Department of Health COVID-19 Contact Tracer and worked in pediatric oncology clinical research operations. In her free time Lauren enjoys hiking, figure skating, and painting.
